Conclusion

The theory of ‘amae’ was formulated in the context of Doi’s efforts to integrate his triple identities: being Japanese, being a Christian and a Catholic follower, and being part of a psychoanalytic tradition rooted in western culture. Throughout his life, these three elements functioned as a catalyst for his ideas, as he sought to relativize them and look at each of them objectively. As a Christian and a psychoanalyst he was in a minority in at least two senses, and this encouraged him to live his Japaneseness not as something self-evident but via self-conscious, even existential efforts. Likewise, being both Japanese and Christian provided him with a means of grasping and verbalizing the essence of psychoanalysis that was unavailable to western psychoanalysts. Finally, being Japanese and having studied psychoanalysis seems to have helped Doi’s Catholic faith to be a ‘living faith’ – without dependence upon or subordination to any specific cultural concept. Doi’s theory of ‘amae’ and his work in general are examples of first-rate psycho-religious thought developed by struggling with and overcoming his‘creative illness’.50
